You are living for your own unique purpose. Even if you have something in common with someone else, such as a passion for health and wellness like me, you show up in that space with a unique purpose.
This article will help you quickly define that unique purpose by creating a personal vision statement.
Why should you create a personal vision statement?
You’ll find the most success in life and in the pursuit of any goal or passion when you hold a personal vision statement to carry with you and remind you why you’re here or pursuing that passion.
Whether you are determining your life purpose or making a healthy decision for yourself right now, doubts might creep in.
You might start to wonder if you can really pursue a goal.
Fear might show up and bring on overwhelm, distraction or procrastination and lower your level of commitment.
Creating a clearly articulated personal vision statement will help you stay connected with your life goals and passions so you live more intentionally. Decisions will become more clear; boundaries will be easier to establish and maintain; opportunities will become more recognizable.
With your mission clearly identified you’ll stay focused on, engaged with, and moving toward your vision.
Furthermore, writing it down and reading it each day will serve to remind you along each step of the way.
So, how do you develop your personal vision statement?
Your personal vision statement should be:
- a unique description about you
- only one sentence long
- inspiring
- future oriented, answering the question “Where/Who do I want to be?”
Grab a pen, paper or your journal, and a cup of chamomile tea.
Steps to writing your personal vision statement
Step 1
What are the most important values you want to express? Write those values down. (I compiled a list of values that you can look at and see if any of words resonate with you.)
Step 2
Visualize yourself living your passion or having achieved your goal. Answer the following:
- Where do you want to be one year from now?
- What are you doing exactly?
- How do you feel in this future vision?
Step 3
Consider how your purpose positively affects others. What is the bigger impact you are having?
Step 4
Create your personal vision statement. Write one sentence that includes your values, your visualization of what you are doing, and how it is impacting others.
Bonus Step 5
Add a drawing or image created by hand, or use a clipping. This could represent your visualization or the feelings associated. You could get creative with color or other imagery–trees for example, if your personal vision statement includes connection with or the preservation of nature; colorful text could inspire a fun attitude if that’s what you’re going for.
Examples of Personal Vision Statements
- For someone who values fun and adventure: I am enjoying life through travel, near and far, and exposing my children to this vast world and all the adventure it holds.
- For someone newly married and wanting to express a personal vow: I am committed to partnership and showing and receiving love every day. (That also might be the vision statement of someone taking steps toward repairing a relationship.)
- For someone who values life-long learning: I am spending my mornings reading materials that enrich my life and help me to enrich others’ lives as well.
- For someone who values honesty: I am living authentically with an open heart to others who want to express their true selves as well.
- For someone who values achievement: I live a satisfying life getting important things done for the good of my household (and/or the company I work with).
Now, what do you do with your personal vision statement?
Most importantly, post your statement somewhere you will see it often, like on a mirror, refrigerator, bulletin board or closet door.
More ideas:
- Make a screensaver for your computer or phone.
- Design a social media banner or post to share.
- Create an inspiring sign that will draw your attention every day.
- Start a “Personal Vision Statement” Pinterest Board on which you can save related and inspiring pins.
- Use Canva to create printable PDFs, or any of these ideas, free. [Warning: Canva is soooo fun!]
